Elementary School Nurse (K-5 Grade)

Banning Lewis Ranch Academy is a tuition-free public charter school authorized by District 49, proudly serving the Banning Lewis Ranch community and surrounding neighborhoods in north eastern Colorado Springs since 2006.

Position Overview:

This position is currently primarily focused on the medical needs of an individual student. While training and support of the school healthroom as a school nurse will be additional tasks, it will not be the primary task. This position is in addition to our current health room services staffing.

The School Nurse supports the health, safety, and well-being of all students by providing direct care, managing health plans, and ensuring compliance with state and school health regulations. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment by addressing student health needs, supporting staff, and partnering with families.

The School Nurse balances clinical expertise with strong organizational systems, ensuring that care is both responsive and proactive.

Core Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Student Health Services & Direct Care

  • Provide daily health services, including first aid, illness assessment, and basic medical care
  • Assess student symptoms and determine appropriate next steps, including return to class, rest, or dismissal
  • Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate care as needed
  • Maintain a safe and organized health room environment
  • Monitor students with ongoing health needs throughout the school day

Health Plans & Medical Management

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs)
  • Manage care for students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, severe allergies, seizures)
  • Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and school policy
  • Maintain accurate medication logs and ensure proper storage and handling
  • Train staff on student-specific health needs and emergency procedures as appropriate

Compliance & Record Keeping

  • Ensure compliance with state and local health regulations and school policies
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student health records in accordance with FERPA and applicable laws
  • Track immunization records and follow up with families to ensure compliance
  • Support required health screenings and documentation
  • Prepare reports and documentation as required by administration or state guidelines

Health Room & Front Office Support

  • Support front office staff in managing student health needs and daily operations
  • Maintain health room supplies, inventory, and organization
  • Assist with student check-in/check-out processes related to illness or injury
  • Collaborate with the Office Manager and front desk staff to ensure smooth daily operations

Safety & Emergency Preparedness

  • Support school-wide safety planning, including emergency response protocols related to health needs
  • Participate in and support safety drills and emergency planning
  • Ensure readiness for medical emergencies, including maintaining supplies and equipment
  • Collaborate with administration on crisis response when health-related situations arise

Family & Staff Communication

  • Communicate with families regarding student health concerns, illness, or injury
  • Provide clear guidance to families on when students should stay home or return to school
  • Support staff with health-related questions, concerns, and student needs
  • Maintain professionalism, empathy, and confidentiality in all communication

Health Education & Prevention

  • Promote healthy habits and wellness practices among students and staff
  • Support education around hygiene, illness prevention, and general wellness
  • Monitor trends in student health and communicate concerns to administration

Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations:

  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • RN licensure in the state of Colorado
  • CPR and First Aid within 6 months of hire
  • CPI within 6 months of hire

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Colorado (required)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Prior experience in pediatric, school, or community health preferred
  • Strong knowledge of health regulations and school-based health practices
  • Must successfully complete a background check
